Mieke Bax

Mieke Bax has a passion for getting her hands dirty—in the best way possible. Trained in a 5-year professional ceramics program in Gouda, she found her happy place the moment she felt clay between her fingers.

For Mieke, pottery is more than art—it’s a moment of peace, a chance to lose herself in the rhythm of shaping, molding, and imagining.

Nowadays Mieke dives into her second great love: painting. It’s faster, bolder, more immediate—watching colors collide on canvas is a whole different kind of magic.

She’s what you’d call a colorist—an artist deeply curious about how colors interact and ignite emotion.
Mieke’s inspiration often springs from something she reads—a striking story in a book or a moving headline in the paper. From there, she weaves her own visual narrative, turning what moved her into something that moves you.

Great historical cities are like painted compositions.
A city begins with a small settlement of a few people who feel comfortable there. Gradually, more people settle in that appealing location, and more 'houses' are added. As the city grows, more facilities emerge: a church, a town hall, a cultural center, a park, a cemetery. These elements are carefully blended into a cohesive whole and are continually adapted to meet the current demands of the time.
The creation of a painting can be compared to this, at least to some extent. On the blank canvas, the painter applies the first brushstroke. There is an idea—but how should it be approached? The idea gradually takes shape—at least in my case—through playing with nuances of color until it eventually forms a satisfying composition.
When I visit a large city, I don't only focus on the main attractions, but especially on experiencing the atmosphere. Every city has its own melody, colors, and scents.
This certainly also applies to my paintings. I try to create an atmosphere using color, texture, and form—one in which I feel at home, and I hope you do too.
